NEWSIES To Release Original Broadway Cast Recording

As the cast and crew begin preparations for Newsies, the musical on Broadway, plans for the original cast recording have been announced. Revealed exclusively from behind-the-scenes at the first rehearsal, the original cast recording will be released this spring on Ghostlight Records. Click HERE to see the announcement in full, as well as reactions from the cast.

Set to be recorded March 3rd - 5th in New York City, the album will capture what The New York Times calls, ‘terrific songs, buoyant melodies, rousing lyrics– and a sweet, funny, emotionally satisfying book. A musical worth singing about!’Fans can register to be the first to learn about the CD pre-sale and release information by joining the Newsies mailing list here

The cast recording will feature the musical’s score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and lyricist Jack Feldman, with book by four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). The stage version introduces brand-new songs while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner,’ ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ The iconic music will be performed by the musical’s original cast, headed by Jeremy Jordan.

The limited engagement of Newsies plays its first Broadway preview on March 15th, prior to its March 29th opening night. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsiesis directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival).

Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional and amateur productions, Newsies’ short run at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall engendered extraordinary interest from the media and public alike. The show’s cast was invited to perform on ABC’s ‘The View©,’ the first time in the talk show’s 15-season history that a regional production had ever done so. Fans who had waited nearly 20 years to see Newsies live onstage, alongside audiences discovering the work for the first time, caused a sensation heard all the way to Times Square, prompting to call the show, ‘one of the biggest surprises of the season…the talk of the town.’

Original Cast Recording Of ONCE Available Nationwide March 13th

Masterworks Broadwayreleases the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Once: A New Musical.Produced by Steve Epstein and Martin Lowe, the album will be available on March 13, 2012. Once begins previews at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 with opening night set for Sunday, March 18, 2012.

Once is the celebrated new Broadway show based on the Academy Award®-winning film. The show includes all of the beloved songs written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová for the critically acclaimed film. The score features the Oscar®-winning hit “Falling Slowly,” as well as two new songs, “Abandoned in Bandon” and the Czech folk song “Ej Pada Pada Rosicka.” One of the most unique elements of this musical is that the 13-member cast of the show act, sing and play all of the instruments: there is no orchestra or separate band. A distinctive aspect to the cast album is that it was produced allowing these talented actors/musicians to record the music in the same style and environment as their stage show. This special recording process not only showcases the gorgeous new orchestrations by Martin Lowe, but also captures the live essence of this extraordinary ensemble.

Once tells the story of an Irish musician (Guy) and a Czech immigrant (Girl) drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted actor/musicians, is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty… and unforgettable in every way.
